Enhanced Oil Recovery from Low Salinity Flooding Workshop

In some very specific sets of circumstances, the injection of water of a salinity lower than the formation water has been demonstrated, in both the laboratory and the field, to increase oil recovery. In other circumstances, it has been demonstrated in the laboratory that no enhancement of recovery has taken place. Effective protocols for laboratory based investigations and their interpretation are crucial in answering questions on the commercial viability of low salinity injection as an enhanced oil recovery technique. Core Specialist Services have designed and are currently managing two tailored core flooding programmes to investigate the potential enhancement in oil recovery. Craig Lindsay has participated in a UK Government Department of the Environment and Climate Change (DECC) workshop on the optimisation of experimental design to investigate the "Low Salinity Effect".
